fix(workspaceindex): skip git-ignored and build-cache dirs in Scan only - #1117
Conversation
Scan has a fixed file budget, and build output (Cargo target/, Python virtualenvs, caches) could exhaust it before real source was reached: repo-map reported truncation and ranked fingerprint files above code. Inside a git work tree, Scan now asks git for the ignored set (`git status --porcelain=v1 -z --ignored=matching .`), so the repo's own .gitignore, nested ignore files, info/exclude and core.excludesFile all apply, including names no fixed list anticipates (.locust_env/). Outside a work tree, or when git is missing, older than 2.16, fails, or exceeds 5s, a fixed list of common build/cache directory names stands in. ShouldSkipDir is unchanged: glob, grep, list_directory and path autocomplete share it and must keep seeing target/, .venv/ and friends. The lookup runs with GIT_OPTIONAL_LOCKS=0 so a per-turn scan never takes .git/index.lock next to a concurrent git command. Fixes Twigpine#1108
… status In `git status --porcelain=v1 -z`, a rename or copy record is followed by one more NUL field holding the original path, with no XY prefix. The parser inspected every field, so an original name beginning with "!! " read as an ignored entry: after `git mv "!! a" b`, a tracked file "a" disappeared from Scan. Move the parsing into parseIgnoredStatus, which consumes that field for R or C in either status column, and test it directly and end to end.

Thanks, this is the shape I asked for: git decides inside a work tree, the fixed list only applies outside one, ShouldSkipDir is unchanged, and the tests isolate the global and system git config. internal/workspaceindex, internal/repomap and internal/workspaceseed pass here on Windows with nothing skipped. Three things before it goes in:
- Disable
core.fsmonitoron the status call. A repository's own.git/configcan setcore.fsmonitorto a command, andgit statusruns it. With that set in a scratch repo, the exact commandgitIgnoredPathsruns wrote a marker file; with-c core.fsmonitor=falseadded, it didn't.Scannow runs this on every turn through the workspace seed, and Zero already refuses project hooks and plugins in an untrusted workspace, so git shouldn't run project-supplied code here either. Putting-c core.fsmonitor=falseingitCommandcloses it. The TUI's startup sweep has the same gap, but that's separate from this PR. - Pass
--untracked-files=normalexplicitly. Withstatus.showUntrackedFiles=noin the user's or the repo's config, git refuses--ignored=matching("Unsupported combination of ignored and untracked-files arguments"), so every scan quietly takes the fallback list. Naming the mode on the command line makes the result independent of that setting. - Merge main. The red Security & Code Health check is GO-2026-6617 and GO-2026-6613 in Go 1.26.6's standard library, which is what the vulnerability note above is about. Main moved to Go 1.26.9 in #1124, so merging main clears it; nothing in this change is involved.
Requesting changes for the first two.
…=normal for status Scan's git status lookup must not run a repository's core.fsmonitor hook or fail when status.showUntrackedFiles=no would reject --ignored=matching.

Hi @Vasanthdev2004 — thanks again for the detailed review; it helped a lot.
I also merged The same git hardening is not applied to the TUI's startup workspace sweep; as you said, I'd keep that separate and am happy to open an issue for it if useful. The workflows on the new head are waiting for approval to run, if you can release them. |

Thanks Fabio, both of my points are fixed in 2dc4049. Taking --untracked-files=normal back out makes TestScanHonorsRepoGitignoreWhenShowUntrackedFilesNo fail, so that one is pinned.
CodeRabbit's two open comments both hold up when I check them, and kevin asked for them, so I'm holding for those two:
- The fsmonitor test can't fail on Windows. With
-c core.fsmonitor=falseremoved,TestGitIgnoredPathsDisablesRepoFsmonitorstill passes here. The hook script has the marker path unquoted, and sh drops the backslashes:touch C:\tmp\run\markercreates a file namedC:tmprunmarkerin the current directory. So the hook runs, but the marker the test checks for is never created. A forward-slash path plus a positive control (status once without the override, and require the marker) would make it fail on all three platforms. - Inherited
GIT_DIRandGIT_WORK_TREE. Git exports both to hooks. With them pointing at another repository, Scan on the same root returned.locust_env/lib/x.py, which root's own.gitignoreexcludes; with a clean environment it doesn't. Dropping the repository-location variables ingitCommandfixes it.
The red Windows smoke job was TestExecCommandForegroundServerReturnsSessionAndServesHTTP, the Windows runner flake tracked in #1097, and has nothing to do with this change. It passed on re-run, so CI is green now.
No need for a separate issue about the TUI sweep. I'm taking that one.

One more thing for later, and nothing for you to change in this PR. |
Git exports GIT_DIR and GIT_WORK_TREE to hooks. With those pointing at another repository, Scan kept .locust_env/lib/x.py, which root's own .gitignore excludes.
On Windows, sh treats an unquoted backslash path as escapes, so the hook ran and the marker the test stats was never created. Require a status without the override to create that marker first.

… slashes Smoke (windows-latest) failed TestGitIgnoredPathsDisablesRepoFsmonitor because core.fsmonitor was set to a backslash script path. Git for Windows hands that value to sh, which consumes the separators, so the hook never runs and the marker is never created. The test now stores a quoted forward-slash path. The product code is unchanged.

Both are fixed at 4fce277, and I checked that each test now fails without its fix on Windows. With -c core.fsmonitor=false removed, TestGitIgnoredPathsDisablesRepoFsmonitor fails with fsmonitor hook ran during gitIgnoredPaths, so the positive control does its job here now. With the environment filter removed, TestScanIgnoresInheritedRepositoryLocation fails with .locust_env/lib/x.py back in the file list. internal/workspaceindex, internal/repomap and internal/workspaceseed pass.
The clean-filter case stays with #1133 as I said, so it doesn't hold this up. Approving.
